CRA Ramps Up Efforts to Recover Pandemic-Related Overpayments

Canada Revenue Agency Expects to Recover Millions

By [Author's Name]

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced that it is ramping up efforts to recover overpayments of pandemic-related benefits. The agency has identified $458 million in funds that were disbursed to ineligible individuals or overpaid to eligible recipients.

The CRA has already denied or adjusted $458 million in overpayments. The agency is now working with individuals and businesses to recover the remaining funds. The CRA has sent out notices to individuals who have received overpayments, and is asking them to repay the funds or provide documentation to support their eligibility.

The CRA is also working with employers to recover overpayments of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS). The CEWS was a temporary program that provided financial support to businesses that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CRA has identified a number of cases where employers have received overpayments of the CEWS. The agency is working with these employers to recover the overpayments.

The CRA is reminding individuals and businesses that they are responsible for repaying any overpayments that they have received. The agency encourages individuals and businesses to contact the CRA if they believe they have received an overpayment. The CRA can be reached at 1-800-959-8281.
