Diamondbacks 7, Brewers 4: Three-homer fifth isn't enough as Milwaukee falls again

Arizona batters erupt in fifth inning with home runs as the Milwaukee Brewers fall to 3-8

Ketel Marte, David Peralta and Jordan Luplow all hit home runs during a five-run fifth inning as Arizona Diamondbacks took a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday

The Brewers, who fell to 3-8 after losing their fifth straight game, scored all four of their runs via Willy Adames' first-inning grand slam off Arizona starter Madison Bumgarner.

But the Diamondbacks answered right back via a two-run homer by Marte in the first and an RBI double by Nick Ahmed in the second to cut the lead to 4-3.Bumgarner settled down after the first inning and allowed just three singles and two walks over his last four innings of work, lowering his ERA to 4.85. The outing, in which Bumgarner threw 59 of his 94 pitches for strikes, was the veteran left-hander's longest of the season.

Arizona (5-6) exploded in the fifth inning against reliever Hoby Milner (0-1). Marte led off with a single and moved to third one out later on a single by Peralta. Both runners came around to score on Luplow's 407-foot homer to left-center field for a 6-4 lead.

Peralta made it three home runs in the inning with a solo blast to right off reliever Jandel Gustave. The Brewers bullpen allowed all three home runs, with Milner allowing two and Gustave the other. Arizona tacked on another run in the sixth inning against reliever Jake Cousins on a bases-loaded walk by Ahmed for a 7-4 lead.

The Brewers outhit the Diamondbacks 9-8, but left seven runners on base, including the bases loaded with one out in the sixth inning after loading the bases with one out against reliever Noe Ramirez. However, Ramirez was able to strike out Andrew McCutchen and get Daniel Vogelbach to ground out to strand all three runners.

Arizona's bullpen was able to strand two more runners in scoring position over the final three innings to preserve the victory.
